The California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is made up of 36 different entities that license and regulate more than three million licensees in more than 280 different license types to protect consumers across the state. Here are answers to some consumer's frequently asked questions about DCA:

An overview of the Boards and Bureaus that license and regulate various professions is available here. There are various industries and businesses not under DCA's jurisdiction and are noted here.

What is a license and why is it important?

Don't put yourself, your family, and your money at risk. The best way to protect yourself is to verify the license of the person or business before seeking services.

A license means the person or business you are working with has met the necessary state standards to practice within their profession. Those providing services without state-required licensure are not only practicing illegally, but also are putting consumers at risk.

How can I check licenses?

Consumers can visit DCA's Search License page online, or they can contact DCA's Consumer Information Center (CIC) at (800) 952-5210 to speak to an agent. Agents are available to assist callers in more than 200 languages.

How can I find the license I'm looking for?

Each Board or Bureau has specific licenses. If you visit the DCA Search License page, you will see a drop-down menu under the Board and Bureau you're seeking containing the licenses available under each Board and Bureau.

What should a consumer look for?

Make sure the license is in good standing and look for any formal disciplinary actions or other documents associated with the license.

What are the risks of working with someone unlicensed?

A professional who practices without a license is participating in illegal activity and puts consumers at risks. Not to mention, they have not met the necessary state standards to practice within their profession.

What resources are available to file a complaint?

Consumers can file a complaint online by visiting DCA's website. Select "File a Complaint", then "File a Complaint against a licensee", and then select the appropriate board/bureau. That will take you to the correct webpage to start the complaint process. Consumers can also call (800) 952-5210 or mail a complaint form to:
