The police in Gauteng continue relentlessly in the fight against crime

PARKTOWN - The law enforcement agencies in Gauteng continue unabated in the fight against crime. On 23 May 2023 until the early hours of 24 May 2023 the law enforcement agencies under the Command of Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela conducted operations simultaneously in three Districts, namely; Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni with the main focus being raids at different hostels.

The team of law enforcement agencies comprised of members from SAPS, Metro Police, Department of Traffic, Department of Home Affairs including Community Police Forum and Private security companies.

Different crime prevention actions such as roadblocks, stop and searches, foot patrols and liquor compliance inspections were also conducted.

During the operations, several people were arrested for various crimes such as possession of drugs, possession of ammunition, contravention of the Immigration Act and five liquor outlets were also shut down and the owners were arrested for dealing with liquor without a license.

The raids at the hostels resulted in the recovery of mandrax tablets to the street value of R9000-00, two stolen vehicles as per Alexandra and Marikana cases and one abandoned firearm with a filled off serial number.

Following the simultaneous hostel raids, Lt Gen Mawela led the multidisciplinary team in Johannesburg to Riverlea and Zamimpilo informal settlement in Langlaagte policing precinct. This is in response to the community's calls for assistance after a shooting incident in the area where no one was injured. The residents allegedly removed illegal electricity connection supplying the informal settlement of which there were illegal mining operations. Lt Gen Mawela also took the opportunity to engage the street committee leaders and conducted stop and searches in the area while other members continued with patrols with the aim of maximizing police visibility and Illegal mining equipment was also seized.

The Provincial Commissioner has assured the community of Gauteng that the police will continue making strides in fighting crime and squeezing the space for criminals. "Surely, it cannot be normal that the police share the same space as criminal, we will continue to have more boots on the ground and turning the tide against crime as we clean the streets of Gauteng," said Lt Gen Mawela.
