Nairobi City County Government Champions Gender Equality at Green Park Terminus on International Women’s Day, Unveils Plans for Gender-Based Violence Safe Houses

Nairobi City County Government today commemorated the International Women's Day (IWD) celebration at Green park terminus, an event organized by the Gender and Inclusivity sub sector in collaboration with civil society and Non-government organizations theme this year is 'Invest in women: Accelerate Progress.'

The purpose of this theme is to examine the pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls around the world. It acknowledges the significant difficulties for women to achieve equal participation in the economy. This year's IWD will center on providing equitable opportunities for women and girls to grow into their full potential and fortify their ability to lead, learn, and earn.
The Director for Gender Ms. Jane Gichure said, "The commemoration of International Women's Day serves to raise awareness of the need for continual activity and advocacy on behalf of women. It is a call to action for all people and organizations to join forces to build a society where women are respected, given the opportunity to succeed, and given the power to realize their full potential. By observing International Women's Day, we can keep bringing attention to the problems that women face and spur forward constructive change for future generations."
She further stated, "Nairobi County stands as a testament to the transformation that can be achieved when organizations unite for a common cause. We will be opening a county Safe house for victims of gender based violence and we have budgeted for 2 more in the next financial year, a project we hope to do in collaboration with partners. I urge all stakeholders to come on board and support this worthwhile cause."

The event which is celebrated in many countries around the world is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
Also present at the event were women Members of the County Assembly including Hon. Joy Muthoni, Hon. Ami Ambala, Hon. Scholastica Muthoni, Hon Joyce Lugonzo, Hon. Virginia Kangethe, Hon Hellen Okello, Hon. Tricer Ayabei accompanied by other county employees. The office of the county commissioner was also represented.
