Newhouse Leads Resolution Designating National First Responder Month

Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) led the introduction of a resolution to designate the month of May as National First Responder Month.

"Our first responders are the front line for the safety and security of our communities, and this resolution designating May as First Responder Month is the least we can do to recognize them for their sacrifice and commitment," said Rep. Dan Newhouse.

Newhouse continues, "With crime at all-time highs, deadly drugs plaguing our communities, and emergency life or death situations happening every day, I thank all of our first responders-whether full time, part time, or volunteers-for their dedication and heroism in the line of duty."

Rep. Newhouse was joined by Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Mike Bost (R-IL), Anthony D'Esposito (R-NY), Adrian Smith (R-NE), and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA).

"True heroism is defined by one's willingness to put the needs of others above their own. It requires sacrifice for the greater good without seeking personal gain,"said Rep. Gus Bilirakis.

Rep. Bilirakis continues, "First responders embody this concept as they put themselves in harm's way each shift to make sure our communities stay safe. When others run away from danger to safety- these brave men and women run toward it - looking for ways to help - even though they know doing so could mean that they don't come home to their own families that night. We all owe them a debt of gratitude that can never fully be repaid and this resolution is a small token of the appreciation we feel for them throughout the entire year."

"As one of the only former professional firefighters in Congress, I know first-hand how important it is that we support and uplift our first responders,"said Rep. Mike Bost.

Rep. Bost continues,"I'm proud to join my colleagues in introducing this Resolution to declare May as First Responder Month, a time to spotlight the hard work our dedicated first responders put in to keep our communities safe."

"The men and women who rush into danger during emergencies deserve our respect every day of the year, and I am immensely honored to have served alongside some of the finest Americans during my time as both an NYPD Detective and Chief of the Island Park Fire Department," said Rep. Anthony D'Esposito.

Rep. D'Esposito continues, "Ensuring that there is a dedicated month on the calendar to recognize the heroic actions of first responders who selflessly serve others is the least we can do as a nation, and I am honored to co-sponsor this resolution."

"The men and women who volunteer to serve in the face of tragedy, crime, and disaster deserve to be honored,"said Rep. Adrian Smith.

Rep. Smith continues, "Recent wildfire and weather disasters in Nebraska's Third District have highlighted the critical civic role of these brave Americans who protect our communities and save lives. Across the country these heroes watch over us around the clock. This resolution is an important way to express our thanks."

"Our first responders work selflessly and tirelessly each day to protect and serve our communities - we owe them the recognition they have rightfully earned,"said Rep. Chrissy Houlahan.

Rep. Houlahan continues, "By supporting this resolution to designate May as National First Responders Month, we celebrate the invaluable and collective contributions of our brave men and women who risk their lives daily to protect ours. Let this serve as a reminder that we must show our unwavering support and gratitude for all first responders and the work they do not only in May but throughout the year."
