(MOFA) - On March 9, 2024, in response to a question about Viet Nam's reaction to the recent tension between China and the Philippines regarding the SecondThomas Shoal, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam Pham Thu Hang made the following statement:

"Viet Nam is deeply concerned with the recent tension in the East Sea which may affect peace, security, and stability in the East Sea.

All activities conducted in the East Sea mustadhere to international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Conventionon the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

We reaffirm the need to respect countries' sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction established in accordance with UNCLOS, avoid activities that may complicate the situation or increase tension, ensure freedom of navigation and overflight, and refrain from the threat or use of force.

We call on relevant parties to exercise self-restraint, seriously implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), resolve disputes by peaceful means, and jointly contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability, and cooperation in these waters."
