Council Approves Creation of Tourism Public Improvement District

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and Council approved the creation of a Tourism Public Improvement District (TPID) to provide funding for expanded and enhanced marketing and promotion of tourism for Corpus Christi.

After witnessing the success of TPIDs in the Texas cities of San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Waco and others, area hoteliers and Visit Corpus Christi (VCC) began working with the Texas Hotel Lodging Association (THLA) on the creation of a TPID in Corpus Christi.

The creation petition required signatures from the owners of over 60% of the hotels with 40 or more rooms within the city limits of Corpus Christi. The City accepted the petition at the June 14 City Council meeting. Two public hearings were held at the June 28 City Council meeting, and the TPID was created.

The TPID will provide a fee assessment of 2% of the taxable room rate at hotels in the Corpus Christi city limits with 40 or more guest rooms. These fees may be passed through to the hotel guest similarly to the Hotel Occupancy Tax.

The fee is expected to generate approximately $3 million annually to fund expanded marketing and tourism promotion for Corpus Christi. These expanded marketing and promotion activities will be administered by VCC and the Corpus Christi Tourism Public Improvement District Corporation (CCTPIDC) board of directors.
