A hundred and fourteen (114) employers in the hospitality sector in and around Potchefstroom were inspected during the week-long blitz inspection, which was overseen by Daniel Moshodi, the acting provincial chief inspector for the North West. Thirty-five (35) compliance orders were issued.

The inspections primarily focused on the hospitality industry, checking compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS), Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), and Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).

In addition to the Blitz Inspections, the Department has been part of the build-up activities from Monday, 16 October 2023, to today, 20 October 2023, by providing its package of services to more than 1600 communities in Ventersdorp, Kanana, Jouberton, and Ikageng. These services include Public Employment Services, Unemployment Insurance Fund services, and Compensation Fund services.

Additionally, over R5.2 million was paid through the Compensation Fund to medical service providers and benefits recipients. More than 347 individuals received assistance from the UIF bus with normal benefit applications. The services were provided in addition to what is typically done at the local labour centres.

To increase the employment prospects of unemployed persons, the Department of Employment and Labour's Public Employment Services (PES) branch was present at the Presidential Imbizo to register Curriculum Vitae (CVs) on the Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) system for possible jobs. The ESSA system can be accessed at https://essa.labour.gov.za/EssaOnline/WebBeans/

According to the Acting Chief Inspector, Mr Moshodi, the common non-compliance was mainly on non-registration of employers and non-declaration of employees by employers in terms of Unemployment Insurance Act; and non-registration and contribution in terms of COIDA.

"We have inspected over 100 companies, and about 30% of them were non-compliant. It is worrying because it means there is still a high number of the workforce that is still suffering. Of more concerning is the noncompliance with the UIA, UICA and COIDA" said Mr Moshodi.

Mr Moshodi indicated that they will continue to advocate these laws until they record a zero non-compliance percentage in the sector and that all the relevant protocols/standard operating procedures will be followed to ensure that those who did not comply are dealt with as per the Labour Law Prescripts.
