Raising awareness about wildfire strategies

Wildfires have become an increasing threat to our local community. As part of Wildfire Preparedness Month this May, Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) representatives will be on hand at several public events to raise awareness and encourage engagement.

Community members can get guidance on preparedness measures, creating defensible spaces and other related topics. ESF and our community partners will be at the Lane County Farmers Market on May 4 and May 18, as well as the Eugene Saturday Market on May 11 and May 25.

As wildfires increasingly impact the Willamette Valley, ESF is proactively addressing these challenges through the launch of a Wildfire Planning and Fuels Management Program.

Supported by funding from the Community Safety Payroll Tax, Deputy Fire Marshal Althea Sullivan is leading this initiative within the Community Risk Reduction and Resiliency Division at Eugene Springfield Fire. Her work will build on existing partnerships with local fuels management organizations and will align with statewide priorities outlined in Senate Bill 762.

Senate Bill 762 reflects Oregon's commitment to modernizing wildfire preparedness with three primary strategies: creating fire-adapted communities, developing safe and effective response, and increasing the resiliency of Oregon's landscapes.

At the local level, the Wildfire Planning and Fuels Management Program will tailor these strategies to meet the specific needs of our community. Key program objectives include expanding public outreach and engagement, increasing fuels management capabilities and developing comprehensive fire-adapted community plans.
