PHOTOS: Capito Delivers Remarks at West Virginia Family Caregiver’s Forum

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va.- Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), co-chair of the Assisting Caregivers Today (ACT) Caucusin the U.S. Senate, delivered remarks at the 2022 West Virginia Family Caregiver's Forum.

The forum helps connect West Virginians with available caregiving services, and provide valuable information on taking care of loved-ones. During the forum, presentations were delivered from the Alzheimer's Association, Charleston Parkinson's Support Group, WV Bureau of Senior Services, AARP-Charleston, and the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.

"One of my top priorities in the Senate is addressing diseases like Alzheimer's, dementia, and Parkinson's. Part of that means having great caregivers be there for those living with these terrible diseases. As someone who personally cared for parents with Alzheimer's, I understand the immense toll this can have on many, which is why I welcomed the opportunity to share my experiences with this group today," Senator Capito said. "I appreciate the work and dedication of the West Virginia chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, the Charleston Parkinson's Support Group, and all the other organizations here today, and I will continue to be a voice for our caregivers in the U.S. Senate."

"Sen. Capito has been a champion of many health causes in West Virginia, but especially those people in West Virginia stricken with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's," George Manahan, Director of the Charleston Parkinson's Support Group, said.

"Caregivers are often forgotten, but the fact that there are over 100,000 family caregivers in the state. These are people taken out of the workforce well before they planned. Today's forum is to show caregivers that they are not alone and there are programs to help them," Sharon Covert, Executive Director of Alzheimer's Association - West Virginia Chapter, said.

Senator Capito has been a leading advocate in the U.S. Senate on Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and Parkinson's research, and has made consistent efforts to support the over 100,000 caregivers in West Virginia. Senator Capito also recently introduced legislation this year to improve palliative and hospice care,andjoined MetroNews Talklinein August for a radio special on Alzheimer's disease and her experience as a caregiver.
