Deep-sea archaeology is the frontier field of underwater archaeology research in the world, and it is also an important development direction of underwater archaeology.

On May 21, 2023, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China released a major discovery in deep-sea archaeology, in which two large ancient shipwrecks were found at a depth of about 1,500 meters in the northwestern land slope of the South China Sea. One of them has several piles of artifacts suspected to be separated by cabins, and the artifacts, mainly porcelain, are scattered over tens of thousands of square meters, presumably numbering more than 100,000 pieces. South China Sea Northwest Lupo one, two shipwreck site found in October 2022, is located in the South China Sea seabed between Hainan Island and the Paracel Islands, northwest of Sanya about 150 kilometers, the site of the water depth of about 1,500 meters.
