Discover Newark's Hidden History Tours

Posted on: Monday, April 8, 2024

Step back in time to explore Newark's past with the return of the hugely popular Hidden History walking tours from this weekend.

The two tours, running weekly until October 2024 are being organised by the National Civil War Centre and Newark Museum, run by Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC).

The first tour, 'Besieged But Never Beaten', offers the chance to discover Newark's crucial role in the British Civil Wars and to explore some of the town's highlights. The second tour charts the tale of Newark Through Time and is crammed with intriguing stories of Anglo Saxon, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian Newark. Both take place on alternate weeks between 1.30pm and 2.45pm, beginning and ending at the National Civil War Centre on Appleton Gate. Tours start this weekend!

Also planned is a 'Deep Dive - Besieged' tour on Saturday 4 May and Saturday 12 July. These are unique tours that include a walk along the river to the Queen's Sconce, a listed earthwork fortification built in 1646 during the first English Civil War to protect the garrison of King Charles I based at Newark Castle.

Then on Saturday 3 August, join a family friendly Newark Through Time tour, while there is a British Sign Language interpreted tour on Saturday 15 June, and an accessible tour on Saturday 7 September.

Councillor Rowan Cozens, Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts, said: "We are pleased to launch our Hidden History Walking Tours this spring which will take visitors on a tour of all the hidden areas of Newark. Our wonderfully knowledgeable tour guides will regale you with tales about how Newark's inhabitants dodged cannonball fire and the plague as you discover the town's Anglo Saxon, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian haunts.

"I'm delighted that there are tours available for everyone and include options for families and people with disabilities. Our history is something that Newark is immensely proud of and we are keen to promote these new walking tours to the public alongside our National Civil War Centre."

Tickets for all tours are £5, except for the Deep Dive tours which are £10 per ticket. Book your tour now at www.nationalcivilwarcentre.com or by calling 01636 655765 from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Numbers on each tour are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
