University Dean named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Tuskegee University College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Channa Prakash has been elected to the 2023 class of fellows for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Prakash is among the class of 502 elected Fellows, which includes scientists, engineers, and innovators spanning all 24 AAAS disciplinary sections who are being recognized for their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements. According to AAAS, Dr. Prakash is being honored for his "distinguished contributions to crop genetics and biotechnology and science communication, and for advocating science-based agricultural development in the developing world."

Dr. Prakash, who has been the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Tuskegee University since August 2015, is a testament to unwavering dedication. In his role, he oversees the university's largest College, responsible for nine departments and two Ph.D. programs. His work in the genetic enhancement of peanuts and sweet potatoes is a shining example of his lifelong commitment to advancing biotechnological methods, advocacy, and communication in science.

"I am deeply honored by this recognition, which affirms my lifelong dedication to advancing crop genetics and biotechnology. Being elected as an AAAS Fellow by my peers recognizes my commitment to advancing scientific understanding and communicating and advocating for science," stated Dr. Prakash.

Dr. Prakash's unique contributions to agricultural biotechnology have resonated globally, earning him prestigious accolades such as the Borlaug Council for Agriculture Science and Technology (CAST)' Communication Award and the title of 'Science Hero-Warrior of Science' by the International Food Information Council. His recognition as one of the Top 30 Social Influencers in Biotech and Pharma by the Huffington Post is a testament to his dedication and influence. His work has enriched the classrooms at Tuskegee University with a deeper understanding of genomics, genetics, and biotechnology and inspired countless others in the scientific community.

Under Dr.Prakash's leadership, the College has experienced unprecedented success in extramural research support, alumni giving, and corporate donations. Prakash actively engages in resource development, fundraising, and external stakeholder relations, overseeing a million-dollar renovation of the historic science building Armstrong Hall and Carver Research building through funds raised from external resources.

A tradition dating back to 1874, election as an AAAS Fellowis a lifetime honor, and all Fellows are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. Distinguished past honorees include W.E.B. DuBois, Ellen Ochoa, Steven Chu, Grace Hopper, Alan Alda, Mae Jemison, and Ayanna Howard. Joining the ranks of Fellows last year were mathematician and STEM education policy expert Talitha Washington, marine biologist Jorge Cortes Nunez, and radiologist and former National Institutes of Health director Elias Zerhouni.

Dr. Prakash's election to the 2023 class of fellows for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is a significant milestone. He is the fourth AAAS Fellow elected from Tuskegee throughout the program's history, and the last Fellow elected was in 1972. This achievement underscores his exceptional contributions to his field.
