Michigan Civil Rights Commission to Meet in Kalamazoo on Monday, April 29

Lansing, MI-The Michigan Civil Rights Commission will hold their second quarterly meeting of 2024 on Monday, April 29, at 10 AM on the campus of Western Michigan University, in the John E. Fetzer Center, Room 1035, 2251 Business Ct., Kalamazoo, MI 49008

Commissioners are expected to consider resolutions addressing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in policing, condemning the great replacement theory, supporting legislation to facilitate the selection and declaration of gender identity, and in support of a ban on the gay panic defense.

The proposed meeting agenda is below. The Commission may revise this agenda or take up other issues as needed and time allows.

The meeting is open to the public and will include a public comment period. Individuals who cannot attend the meeting in person but who wish to provide public comment may do so by sending their comments by email to [email protected] by 5 pm on Friday, May 3, 2024.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and CART captioning will be provided. Free parking is available adjacent to the Fetzer Center. Individuals requiring reasonable accommodations to attend should submit their request to [email protected] no later than 5 pm on Thursday, April 25.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution to safeguard constitutional and legal guarantees against discrimination. The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights serves as the operational arm of the Commission.
