City Seeks Community Feedback in Selection of New Police Chief

Long Beach, CA - What professional experience and characteristics do you want to see in the next Chief of the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD)? The City of Long Beach is asking the community to answer that question in a public survey that will help inform the selection process for a new leader of the LBPD.

"I'm looking forward to hearing from the community through this public survey," said City Manager Tom Modica. "Community partnership is a critical aspect to modern policing and our Police Chief's vision must reflect the needs of our diverse community."

The survey is available now online and hard-copy format at all Long Beach Public Library branches (except Alamitos Neighborhood Library, which is temporarily closed for repairs), and will be available through Sunday, November 7, 2021.

The person hired will be filling a vacancy left by Chief Robert G. Luna, who announced last month that he will be retiring in December 2021.

Long Beach's Police Chief oversees the second largest municipal police agency in Los Angeles County and provides law enforcement services to the seventh largest city in California, as well as contracted services to the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Airport, Long Beach Transit and Long Beach City College. With more than 800 sworn officers and approximately 1,200 personnel, the LBPD's annual operating budget is more than $211 million.

Candidates are being considered from among all current and former LBPD personnel holding the rank of commander and above, as well as any chiefs and assistant/deputy chiefs from other jurisdictions, with a strong preference for those who have experience working in California. A job brochure has been published with more details.

The recruitment process is expected to be finalized by December of this year and a new Police Chief announced prior to the beginning of the new year. Candidates will undergo a multi-step screening and interview process with Human Resources, a community panel, a technical panel, City department directors and ultimate selection by the City Manager.
