Science Honors for Pam Belluck

I am pleased to share news that Pam Belluck has won the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting given by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. The award recognizes a body of work produced over a five-year period. The judges wrote that her journalism "shows a broad range, an unflinching style, and an ability to walk us through important ideas in ways that feel as if she's holding your hand without being intrusive… to tell stories with kindness and sensitivity."

The stories submitted show her range, her determination and her empathy. Among them were a harrowing narrative about Jim Bello, a previously healthy, athletic 49-year-old ravaged by the coronavirus; an investigation of the F.D.A.'s problematic approval of Aduhelm, the Alzheimer's drug; and her piece about efforts to surgically repair the damage done to women who had undergone genital cutting.

"Pam brings nuance and context to divisive issues like abortion and delicate subjects like mental health," said Hilary Stout, Pam's editor. "And her stories shine a light on undercovered issues."

This year, Stephanie M. Lee, formerly of BuzzFeed News, also won the award in recognition of her investigative reporting. Two other New York Times reporters have won the award since its inception in 2000: Elisabeth Rosenthal in 2014 and Denise Grady in 2009. Apoorva Mandavilli won it in 2019, the year before she joined The Times.

Please join us in congratulating Pam on this very special award.
