Candidates for 2022-2023 Resident Scholar Program Selected

ASA is pleased to announce the next cycle of participants in the Anesthesiology Policy Research Rotation in Political Affairs - also known as the Resident Scholar program. Five talented residents have been selected to participate in the 2022-2023 Resident Scholar program, an American Board of Anesthesia (ABA)-approved rotation that allows resident physicians who will be in their CA-3 or fellowship year to gain hands-on experience with the political, legislative, and regulatory factors that affect the delivery of patient care.

The selected Resident Scholars are: John Guzzi, MD, Eric Reilly, DO, Dev Vyas, MD, John Waddell, MD, and Siyun "Sisi" Xie, MD. These top candidates were selected from a highly competitive pool of nationwide applicants based on engagement in measurable advocacy activities, history of engagement and interest in continued involvement, and a personal interview. Short biographies of our selected Resident Scholars are included below:

Selected Residents:
John Guzzi, MD

Dr. Guzzi is currently a CA-2 at Yale University and a member of the ASA Resident Component House of Delegates. Dr. Guzzi will be the first Resident Scholar selected to represent Yale. Dr. Guzzi received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown University and his undergraduate degree from Boston College.

Eric Reilly, DO
Dr. Reilly is president-elect of the ASA Resident Component Society and is the resident representative on ASA's Committee on Governmental Affairs. He will be the first Resident Scholar to represent Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, where he is currently a CA-2. He received both his undergraduate degree and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University.

Dev Vyas, MD
Dr. Vyas is a CA-2 at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Vyas earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida. He is also a FAER Scholar.

John Waddell, MD
Dr. Waddell received his Bachelor of Science degree at Mississippi College and his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He is currently a CA-2 completing residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and enjoys advocating for the patients of Mississippi.

Siyun "Sisi" Xie, MD
Dr. Xie is a CA-2 at the University of Texas Medical Branch and is the first Resident Scholar selected to represent this institution. She is actively involved with the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Xie received her bachelors and medical degree from Indiana University.

Since 2010, ASA has been developing anesthesiology residents' knowledge in advocacy and policy through the Resident Scholar program. Residents interested in gaining first-hand experience in a political environment are strongly encouraged to apply.
