In response to concerns about road safety on the B3109 Bradford Road in Corsham, Wiltshire Council is making some changes to the current 50mph speed limit.

From week commencing 22 April, work will start to reduce the speed limit to 40mph, with an advisory 20mph speed limit in place during school opening and closing times. Flashing signs will warn people of the 20mph speed limit during term times, from 8.20am-9am and 2.50pm-3.20pm, which has been agreed with Corsham Primary School.

Cllr Caroline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: We have listened to community concerns about the safety of the B3109 and, following our investigation, have decided to reduce the speed limit to 40mph and 20mph during the times when children will be travelling to and from school.

We recognise that many people think that the speed limit should be 30mph, but our research shows that it is unlikely that this would be adhered to by the majority of motorists, which is why we have gone for this option as a more appropriate solution.

We will also be providing a new footway from Park Place to the toucan crossing on Bradford Road later in the year, and we are in discussions with the school about the potential to relocate the school gate and fence on Bradford Road to widen the footway by the existing pedestrian refuge.

We also recommend using Community Speedwatch and speed indicator devices (SIDs), which can be supported though the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG) and will be working with the school to refresh their school travel plan, providing continued support with education programmes such as Bikeability and Park and Stride.

As set out in our Business Plan, we are committed to improving road safety, and we feel that these changes, plus the continued monitoring of the road, will make it safer for both pedestrians and all other road users.
