Statement on the passing of Arthur L. Irving

FREDERICTON (GNB) - The following message of condolence was issued by Premier Blaine Higgs following the passing of Arthur L. Irving:

Marcia and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Arthur L. Irving, chairman emeritus and former president of Irving Oil.

Until he passed, Arthur remained active in the business and was recognized for his 73 years of service to the company and New Brunswick. He brought endless energy and dedication to serving customers and building the business. Through it all, he was a New Brunswicker first and proud of his roots.

Arthur championed the growth of Irving Oil in the marketing of refined products and expanding the refinery to the largest in Canada. Under his leadership as chairman of the board, the company would be named one of Canada's top 100 employers in 2017, a title the company has maintained for eight consecutive years.

Despite his achievements as a Canadian and international business leader, he remained grounded in his New Brunswick roots.

His impact extends far beyond the business, as he served as chancellor of Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., from 1996 to 2010, sat on the board of directors of Ducks Unlimited for 30 years, and founded the Arthur L. Irving Family Foundation. He also received the Order of Canada in 2002 and the Order of New Brunswick in 2012. His devotion to his family, friends and community will long be remembered.

On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I offer my sincere condolences to his wife, Sandra, his children, and the rest of his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time.
