First Baltimore City EVsmart Chargers Now Live at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (June 15, 2021) - Three EVsmart electric vehicle chargers are now available for public use at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. These chargers are part of BGE's publicly available charger network that will consist of a mix of 500 L2 chargers and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) once fully built.

'Electric vehicles can benefit our entire community and expanding access to charging is a major step toward ensuring a cleaner and brighter future for everyone. The Maryland Zoo is a conservation and sustainability leader, and it makes sense that they host our first Baltimore City based EVsmart chargers,' said Rodney Oddoye, BGE senior vice president of governmental and external affairs. 'It is our goal to lead Maryland to a clean energy future and we appreciate the partnerships we've built with Baltimore City and The Maryland Zoo which will help Marylanders benefit from cleaner air and water.'

These chargers are part of BGE's EVsmart Program which also provides customers with rebates, tools, and information that they need to go electric. BGE works with state, county, and municipal government agencies throughout its service area to determine optimal locations, on government-owned property, to site the chargers.

'BGE has been a long-time supporter of The Maryland Zoo and we are very proud to partner with them to host these Electric Vehicle charging stations for the public,' said Kirby Fowler, president/CEO of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. 'Promoting active conservation and sustainable living is integral to the Zoo's mission. We focus on recycling, composting and gardening on grounds to supplement animal dietary needs with freshly grown produce, and are happy to provide space for the EV chargers to those who are seeking to live a more sustainable lifestyle.'

More information on EVs, chargers, and federal and state incentives can be found at bge.com/electricvehicles. Users can explore online savings calculators that compare EVs to gasoline-powered cars in terms of fuel and commute costs, carbon impacts, and more. BGE customers can also apply for rebates to help offset the cost of chargers.

The EVsmart Program is a joint effort by Exelon's Maryland-based utilities (BGE, Delmarva Power, and Pepco) and fuels progress on Maryland's Air Quality and Chesapeake Bay goals, which include having 300,000 zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road by 2025.
