Lights out for birds during the month of May

The Kennebunk Conservation Commission wants to help migrating birds and help you save energy with "Lights Out for Birds" this May.

It's that time of year when billions of birds are reaching the northern end of their long migration journey. Sadly, many do not survive. One reason is the ever increasing levels of light pollution. The vast majority of bird species tend to migrate at night, using the stars to navigate. Man-made lighting interferes with this natural process and causes millions of birds to collide with buildings or confuse them into flying a circular pattern that eventually leads to exhaustion and loss of energy reserves.

How you can help: Turn off decorative lights and bright lights during the month of May. You will help migrating birds and conserve energy! To find out how else you can make a difference, go to: www.kennebunkmaine.us/lightsout
