Akers Named Dean of UMHB’s Scott & White School of Nursing

BELTON, Texas-The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) has selected Dr. Shanna Akers as its new dean of the Scott & White School of Nursing. She will officially begin her role at UMHB on June 1, 2024.

Dr. Akers is a dynamic leader with extensive experience in executive leadership and education. She spent thirteen years at Liberty University as a professor, chair, associate dean, administrative dean, and five years as dean. Dr. Akers spearheaded numerous initiatives in curriculum development and strategic planning. Her leadership spans online and residential programs at all levels of nursing higher education, from undergraduate to doctoral offerings. She has also demonstrated versatility in her expertise by most recently serving as the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Covenant Journey Seminary/Academy, leading the design and implementation of a K-12 curriculum.

Dr. Akers has been actively engaged in accreditation efforts across various disciplines, including nursing, healthcare simulation, respiratory therapy, forensic science, and social work, and has contributed to SACSCOC accreditation and reaffirmation processes. With nearly 30 years of experience as a registered nurse, her dedication to excellence in nursing education is evident.

"Dr. Akers brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new role, and I am confident she will be a strong leader for the university," UMHB Executive Dean of the Mayborn College of Health Sciences Colin Wilborn said.

Beyond her academic endeavors, Dr. Akers is deeply committed to the nursing profession, serving in prominent roles within both public service and professional organizations. As a gubernatorial appointee to the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority Board and Commissioner on Nursing Education for the Virginia Nurses Association (VNA), she has significantly influenced shaping healthcare policies and driving forward nursing education initiatives. Her community engagement further extends to participation in state collaborative groups, task forces, and serving as a reviewer and advisory board member for academic nursing research journals, underlining her comprehensive contributions to the field.
