UNC School of Law Institute for Innovation Collaborates with Channel to Support Wilmington Small Business Owners

WILMINGTON, N.C., May 7, 2024 - Channel, Live Oak Bank's inclusive small business center serving minority entrepreneurs in the region, has launched a collaboration with the UNC School of Law Institute for Innovation to provide legal counsel to local business owners.

"This is a phenomenal opportunity to combine Channel's business resources with the nationally recognized UNC School of Law," said Chakema Clinton-Quintana, director of Channel. "The UNC School of Law Institute for Innovation is bringing three wonderful clinics to our area, so local business owners don't have to travel to take advantage of this exceptional, and free, programming."

Channel will host three of the Institute's law clinics in 2024. The clinics are run by law school students, and supervised by full-time members of the law school faculty:

  • Startup NC Law Clinic advises for-profit startups, entrepreneurs, and small businesses across a broad spectrum of North Carolina industries.
  • Community Development Law Clinic advises social entrepreneurs who seek to bring about positive social change by forming and qualifying tax-exempt nonprofit organizations.
  • Intellectual Property Clinic assists individuals and small businesses with trademark and copyright clearance, protection, and contractual matters that affect intellectual property rights.

"Carolina Law was recently named one of the top 20 law schools in the country, as ranked by U.S News and World Report, and we are thrilled to bring our expertise to the coast in this collaboration with Channel," said Aaron C. Gard, executive director of the UNC School of Law Institute for Innovation. "Our aim is to help the small business owners of Channel turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality - with the legal expertise of Carolina Law behind them."
