MADISON, Wis. - After two high scoring affairs to start to the season, the University of Dubuque men's basketball team muscled out a road victory on Tuesday night, taking down Edgewood, 67-61.

After scoring 112 points in the first two games of the season, it looked like the Spartans may have been on the path to another high scoring affair as they raced out to a quick 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes on Tuesday night. However, the UD offense would go cold, scoring just two points over the next seven minutes, but thankfully for the Spartans, the Edgewood Eagles were not lighting the nets on fire either.

Edgewood would take their largest lead of the first half at 27-20 after an and one basket with 53 seconds remaining before halftime. Carter Stevens would get two buckets in the final 46 seconds for the Spartans to send them into halftime down just three points, despite shooting 27.8% from the field in the half.

The scoring would pick up in the second half for both teams and the Spartans would regain the lead on an Avery Butler lay-up with 15:18 to play. The Eagles would even up the score a couple times in the following minutes but could never break through and the Spartans would extend their lead all the way up to eight points with 11:30 remaining.

The Eagles made several pushes over the final minutes, even cutting the UD lead to two and three points at the 3:24 and 3:16 marks, but those were only times that Edgewood would be within one possession over the final 12:26.

The Spartans played 10 men on Tuesday night, with all 10 players scoring at least one field goal. Mitch Burger and Avery Butler paced the Spartans with 13 points each. The free throw line, which has been a kryptonite in the past for UD, worked in their favor on Tuesday night.. The Spartans sank 16-21 (76.2%) from the charity stripe, including two down the stretch from Burger to seal the game.

While the Spartans were outshot percentage wise (44.9% to 35.5%), the Spartans attempted 13 more shots than the Eagles, while making the same amount of field goals (22). UD forced Edgewood into 21 turnovers, scoring 22 points off those turnovers, and limited the Eagles to just five offensive rebounds.

The Spartans return to action in one week to begin American Rivers Conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 26th at Simpson College.
