Cortez Masto Announces More Than $150,000 for Tahoe Economic Development

March 08, 2021

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that the Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a grant of $164,348 to the Tahoe Prosperity Center to support economic revitalization in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

'I was thrilled to support the Tahoe Prosperity Center's application for an EDA grant for CARES Act funds. These funds will allow the Center to continue to partner with other groups to coordinate an economic recovery plan that benefits all of Tahoe. I'll keep working in the Senate to secure additional resources for the region, protect the lake, and promote affordable housing, up-to-date transportation, and good-paying jobs in the community.'

BACKGROUND:

Senator Cortez Masto has consistently led efforts in the Senate to foster the economic and environmental resilience of the Lake Tahoe region. She has helped deliver billions of dollars in COVID-19 relief to Nevada, including more than $8 million in transportation for the Tahoe region alone. As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto has pushed for resources to help workers who want to adjust to a changing economy. She has also advocated for 21st-century solutions to decrease congestion on roads, encourage electric vehicles, and develop the infrastructure to support smart growth. In addition, she supports legislation to encourage affordable housing.

This EDA investment grant to the Tahoe Prosperity Center will support the preparation of a regional economic recovery and resiliency action plan that outlines implementation steps to diversify the regional economy in Washoe County. The project will analyze pre-coronavirus pandemic economic indicators and identify initiatives and actions to foster economic growth in non-tourism industries. Once implemented, the plan will lead to diversification of the regional economy, which will provide more employment opportunities for the region's workforce.
