With addition of electric vehicle charging stations this year, Billings will have most in the state

Billings Logan International Airport hosted a ribbon-cutting for its six new electric vehicle charging stations on Thursday afternoon.

With the addition of these six stations, and new stations planned for two Billings Town Pump locations this year, Billings will have a total of 26 charging stations, the most in the state.

"It's really important that Billings have the kind of infrastructure for charging stations that we're going to need in the future and I think Billings is on the right track," said Billings Mayor Bill Cole.

Director of Aviation and Transit Kevin Ploehn admitted he was skeptical about the stations at first, but after some convincing, he realized they would be a good fit at the airport.

"I got on board, got the grant from the state, and two years later, it's real," Ploehn said.

Installation of the charging stations was actually completed in November of 2021. Ploehn said the stations have been in use since then, but the airport was waiting on better timing for a ribbon-cutting.

With electric Tesla vehicles in the background on display by Denny Menholt Chevrolet and Billings Archie Cochrane Ford, the mayor, Ploehn, and others involved in the installation, stood by for the ribbon-cutting.

This marks the third set of charging stations on city property.

Town Pump will have charging stations installed at its 517 Shiloh Rd. and 2711 N. Frontage Rd. locations by the end of this year.

While Mayor Cole is proud to be part of offering electric vehicle stations in the city, he expressed the importance of the oil industry.

"Let me be clear, oil is not going away any time soon," he said.
