The Renewable Apprentices Helping Keep Our Turbines Turning

ScottishPower Renewables' first ever onshore wind apprentices helped the company mark Scottish Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the benefits of a career delivering a clean, green energy.

Ben Findlay, from Strathaven, and Denver Pollock, from Alva, are operation and maintenance apprentices serving their four year apprenticeship working across ScottishPower's huge onshore wind fleet.

Ben initially studied electrical and mechanical engineering at Strathclyde University and decided his interests lay in a practical and hands-on role. The onshore apprenticeship has allowed him to combine education and practical work experience.

He said: "Renewable energy is such an important part of all our futures - it will always be there - and I know it's an industry that can really offer me places to go.

"The apprenticeship has been interesting. The training that was moved onsite for the in-turbine experience was great and helped progress my understanding of the turbine and grow my skills."

Denver joined the apprentice programme straight from school, where he became interested in climate change and the responsibility we all have to help save the planet.

He said: "I was really keen to keep learning, and with my interest in creating a greener and better future for ourselves and the planet, the renewables apprenticeship has been the perfect way to build my knowledge and expertise in an industry that suits me.

"I would recommend anyone to go for it. I've enjoyed my apprenticeship so far. Once you're in, the opportunities that unfold within ScottishPower and the wind industry are limitless, especially with all the new technology that is unfolding."

After completing their apprenticeship programme both Ben and Denver will become fully qualified operational technicians, working within the field operations team looking after all of ScottishPower's onshore renewables assets.
