Statement by Congressman Kildee on New Rule Holding Polluters Accountable for PFAS Contamination

WASHINGTON-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08), co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, issued the following statement after the Biden administration designated two widely used toxic PFAS chemicals as hazardous substances under the Superfund law:

"The designation of two PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, as hazardous substances under the Superfund law will ensure that polluters, not taxpayers, pay to clean up their contamination. I applaud President Biden for taking this action to finally hold polluters accountable for exposing communities in mid-Michigan, and across the country, to toxic PFAS chemicals.

"It is unacceptable that over 200 million Americans have PFAS-contaminated water and that our servicemembers are forced to live on bases with known PFAS contamination. As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, I have long fought to accelerate efforts to clean up PFAS contamination in our communities and at our military bases.

"This designation, and a first-ever drinking water standard for PFAS, are critical steps toward addressing the threat PFAS poses to our families and children. But our work here isn't done. We must also ensure that every American, veteran and servicemember who is sick because of their exposure to PFAS gets the health care and treatment they need."
