Killeen downgrades to Stage 1 Water Conservation Plan

KILLEEN, Texas (April 23, 2024) - The City of Killeen is downgrading to Stage 1 of the current Drought Contingency and Water Conservation Plan beginning immediately, under the advisement of the Bell County Water Control and Improvement District #1. WCID reports that the Brazos River Authority (BRA) confirmed that Lake Belton's lake level has risen about six feet above the Stage 2 trigger level, and is anticipated to remain above that level for an extended period.

Cities that fall under WCID #1 have been in Stage 2 of the Water Conservation Plan since Aug. 1, 2023. WCID #1 provides water to the citizens of Killeen, Fort Cavazos, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Belton and Nolanville.

The Stage 1 Water Conservation Plan means there are mild water shortage conditions:

1. Water customers are requested to voluntarily limit the irrigation of landscaped areas to Sundays and Thursdays for customers with a street address ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8), and Saturdays and Wednesdays for water customers with a street address ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9).

2. Water customers are requested to voluntarily limit the irrigation of landscaped areas only between the hours of midnight to 10:00 am or 8:00 pm to midnight on designated watering days.

3. Water customers are requested to practice water conservation and to minimize or discontinue water use for non-essential purposes.

The City of Killeen wants to remind residents year-round conservation by all, benefits all. WCID #1 and the City of Killeen appreciates all the residents who did and are doing their part to conserve all year round.
