Summer galleries open in Hiedanranta and Haihara Art Centre

An exhibition by Liisa Tarleena Öhman, Kaikesta huolimatta (lit. Despite everything) is now open in Muuntotila Gallery located in Lielahti Manor. Open until 28 May, the exhibition showcases ceramic sculptures left to their own devices. Their humorous nature and rich colours bring the hand-sculptured pieces to life. Also on display is a letter case with more than a hundred small ceramic works depicting everyday treasures: everything from a sugar cube to a cinema ticket, from an acorn to a tuft of hair. The exhibition is a tribute to benevolence.

A joint exhibition Yleisvalo (lit. General light) by Markus Lampinen, Paula Ollikainen and Hanna Vihriälä opens on Saturday 13 May in Haihara Art Centre's Kartano. The common theme of the exhibition, which is open until Sunday 4 June, is light: its direction and movement, thoughts that are struggling towards it, hues that attempt to trace its colour. At the same time, Haihara's other exhibition space Talli hosts final works of young people who have completed their basic education in visual arts at the Sara Hildén Academy. Works include paintings, photographs, collages, comic art and moving pictures.

Free admission to exhibitions!

Free exhibitions, workshops and events draw people from Haihara to Hiedanranta. If you travel by bicycle, it only takes about an hour from Kaukajärvi to Lielahti Manor. On the way to the Manor, you can stop off at Culture House Laikku at the Central Square to visit the art exhibitions and events there. Also worth remembering are the park concerts organised at Laikunlava Stage right next to the Culture House. Over the summer they offer choral singing, dancing, and music from many different genres. It is also easy to reach the destinations by public transport: bus line number 10 takes you straight to Haihara Art Centre, with less than a 100-metre walk from the end stop to the manor house. The closest bus stop for Hiedanranta can be reached with bus lines 9, 13 and 19, and from there it is a 15-minute walk to culture.

Highlights from the Public Cultural Services summer events

Night of the Museums on Saturday 20 May is also the opening night for Culture House Laikku's new exhibitions, with a public exhibition opening at 6 p.m. Jasmine Färling is going on a hunt for the lion of Ruokolahti, while sculptures by Marja Patrikainen introduce a cascade of materials. The artists themselves are also present at the opening. A much-requested ukulele concert begins at 7 p.m. on Laikunlava Stage, and Children's Culture Centre Rulla celebrates a strange night of soft toys from 6 to 9 p.m. You are welcome to bring your own toy for a nocturnal visit to Rulla!

Laikku and the Whole World event surrounds the Culture House with a joyful party atmosphere. The event on Saturday 10 June from 1 to 6 p.m. is all about celebrating cultural diversity and getting to know art from different cultures together with the whole family. Dancing and music guaranteed! During the event, the Laikunlava Stage will host, for example, African drumbeats, a Bollywood show, folk dances from different countries and interactive, multilingual concerts for children. In the park area, you can try out musical instruments and circus equipment, paint works of art and participate in a chain throwing game.

Summer park concerts are again going to take over parks and gardens in the districts, and the traditional, long-awaited Haihara Jazz will provide mood music on Sunday 16 July at Haihara Art Centre in Kaukajärvi. Concerts and events at Hiedanranta factory milieu can be enjoyed throughout the summer, and on Saturday 19 August, the whole family is invited to Hiedanranta Garden Party.
