Anchorage Assembly Rejects Homeless Encampment Regulations Despite Downtown Business Backing

Anchorage, Alaska - Tonight, at a special assembly meeting, despite concerted efforts and widespread support from downtown business owners, the Anchorage Assembly failed to pass AO 2024-26(S) in a 6 to 4 vote. The vote came after the assembly failed to approve funding to ship Sprung structure to Anchorage that would be constructed as a homeless and navigation shelter.

The proposed ordinance sought crucial amendments to certain sections of the Anchorage Municipal Code to tackle the pressing challenges posed by homeless encampments. Key provisions included the prohibition of homeless camps within a 10-block radius of licensed homeless and transient shelters, as well as the reduction of the minimum period for posting abatement notices from 15 days to 10.

Additionally, the ordinance aimed to prohibit homeless camps exceeding 25 structures or individuals and provide for 24-hour abatement of camps near wastewater public nuisances. Despite overwhelming support from downtown business owners, who recognized the urgent need for actionto address the growing homelessness crisis impacting downtown Anchorage, the proposed ordinance fell short of the votes required for passage by the Anchorage Municipal Assembly.

Commenting on the outcome, Mayor Bronson expressed disappointment while reaffirming theAdministration's commitment to finding effective solutions to improve public safety.

"While we are disappointed by the outcome of the vote, my administration remains committed to keeping downtown safe and welcoming for residents and visitors alike," said Mayor Bronson. "We deeply appreciate the support of downtown business owners, and together, we will continue to prioritize public safety and address homelessness in preparation for the upcoming tourist season."
