City will Conduct Mosquito Control Applications via Helicopter to Prevent Mosquito Hatch Offs

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Tuesday, April 30, 2024 - The City of Des Moines has scheduled a communitywide, aerial mosquito control treatment beginning next week, the week of May 6-10, weather permitting.

This initial mosquito treatment will be applied via helicopter by Clarke Mosquito Control and Management, the City of Des Moines' contracted mosquito management service provider. The application will focus on the larger bodies of water surrounding Des Moines and will target mosquitoes in the larval stage to prevent them from becoming flying, biting adults.

It is important to note that during this application there will be no spraying over residential properties. The mosquito control treatments, applied correctly and using EPA-registered products, will not harm humans, pets and animals, or the environment, and are an important practice for protecting the public from mosquito-borne diseases. There are no requirements for the public to avoid treated areas during or after the application of this product.

New for the Upcoming Spray-Season: Section-Based Treatment Scheduling

For 2024, City officials have mapped the area typically treated during communitywide mosquito control applications into eight sections, and citywide applications will now be scheduled and completed on a section-by-section basis. Residents can learn more about our contract with Clarke by visiting DSM.city/mosquito.

Mosquito control treatment notifications will continue to be communicated broadly to the community, with the added detail of anticipated treatment dates for each city section. Residents can sign up for text or email treatment notifications through Clarke's Resident Hotline at 1-800-942-2555, or online at https://www.clarkeportal.com/hotline.

Residents can Opt-Out of Mosquito Control Treatment

Mosquito control treatment in residential areas will tentatively begin late May or early June depending on mosquito population levels. The City of Des Moines will notify residents prior to application.

Residents can request their private, single-family residential property be omitted from adult mosquito control treatments by submitting a Des Moines Mosquito Control Treatment Opt Out Form or calling 1-800-942-2555. Requests must be received at least five business days prior to scheduled treatment and will be valid throughout the 2024 season. Requests must be renewed annually, but Clarke is currently still honoring opt-outs from last year.
