For a Fourth Time, Hagerty Presses Yellen for Update on the Promised Investigation of Taxpayer Information Leak

Nearly two years after ProPublica leak, Treasury Secretary still without answers

WASHINGTON-United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, today pressed U.S. Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen-for the fourth time-for an update on the promised investigation into the ProPublica leak of confidential taxpayer information that occurred almost two years ago.

Hagerty's last three demands for transparency from Yellen and the Department of Treasury in September 2021, November 2021, and May 2022 were met with evasive responses and no answers from a vaguely-described investigation.

Under questioning from Hagerty today, Yellen remained without answers. "I'm afraid that I know no more about this than I did when the leak first occurred… There are independent investigations that follow their own timelines, and I can't tell you when they're going to be concluded. I would suggest that you ask those investigators when they think it might be concluded," Yellen said.

Hagerty stressed the consequence of the Biden Administration's continued stonewalling. "It damages the confidence of taxpayers in America," Hagerty concluded.
