Press Release – Bangor School Committee

August 4, 2021

On August 3, 2021 the Bangor School Department was informed that a new criminal charge has been filed against School Committee member John Hiatt. The School Department takes these allegations very seriously, and is prepared to cooperate fully with law enforcement in connection with any investigation. Superintendent Tager commented 'These allegations are very concerning when our priority is the safety and well-being of all of our students and employees.' Superintendent Tager is working with legal counsel in regard to this member's participation status on the Bangor School Committee.

At this time the School Department is not aware whether the charges against Mr. Hiatt involve alleged use of School Committee property. School Committee members are issued tablet computers by the School Department for use in carrying out their School Committee responsibilities. The School Department previously requested return of the tablet issued to Mr. Hiatt, and was informed that the tablet was not in Mr. Hiatt's possession. The School Department requires School Committee members to observe the same requirements for use of electronic devices that are required of staff, including prohibiting any use that is illegal or in violation of other School Committee policies, and any use that involves materials that are obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, or sexually suggestive.
