Construction work on Largs seawall in the final stages

Posted on 1 May 2024

The construction of a new Largs seawall is in the final stages with work set to be completed in the coming weeks.

The £4.6m project is almost complete with the northern section of the promenade expected to re-open to pedestrians before the summer season gets under way.

The project has seen the creation of a new precast concrete seawall in front of the existing seawall structure, for a 300-metre stretch of the promenade between Aubery Crescent and the existing RNLI slipway.

It has also allowed for the promenade to be extended to the line of the new wall, while the steps to the beach have also been replaced, improving accessibility for visitors.

The existing seawall - which was constructed in the 1970s - had deteriorated over time, due to repeated exposure to seawater.

The new seawall should provide optimum protection and support against wave activity and coastal erosion.

The work to construct the new seawall has been delivered by contractors RJ McLeod, on behalf of North Ayrshire Council.
