The Paris Conference to support the Sudanese transition

The Conference, attended by numerous Heads of State and Government, Heads of International Financial Institutions as well as Foreign Ministers, underlined once again the international community's continued resolve to lend support to Sudan's democratic transition.

The High Representative and Vice-President Josep Borrell represented the European Union on that occasion. He underlined the EU's continued political support to Sudan's democratic transformation and peace process as well as the EU's broader development and humanitarian support to Sudan. He also conveyed the readiness of the EU to support Sudan's arrears clearance vis-à-vis the International Monetary Fund, subject to the conclusion of internal processes. The High Representative also underscored that the EU is working closely with the European Investment Bank to help clear Sudan's arrears and ensure that the latter can restart its activities in the country.

A hope and inspiration well beyond Sudan

In the Horn of Africa region, which remains a geo-strategic priority for the EU, Sudan stands out with its unique model of a coalition between civilian and military elements working towards a truly civilian-led democratic government.

The Sudanese people - with the country's youth and women at the forefront - impressed the world two years ago as they peacefully protested for peace, justice and freedom; setting their hopes for a better future. Even now, the democratic transformation of Sudan continues to be an inspiration well beyond the borders of one of Africa's biggest countries.

In less than 2 years, Sudan has made considerable progress in strengthening human rights and initiating important economic reforms. In October 2020, the Transitional Government and the majority of armed opposition groups signed the Juba Peace Agreement, a milestone on the road to comprehensive peace in the country. In December 2020, after 27 years, Sudan was also removed from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list.

A strong and continuous EU support

The EU has been a staunch supporter of Sudan's political and economic transition from its onset. This is why last year, the EU co-hosted with Germany, the UN and Sudan a successful Sudan Partnership Conference, raising $1.8 billion with half of the pledges coming from #TeamEurope.

Notably, the EU is one of the leading partners of Sudan. Since the start of the transition, the EU has provided nearly €300 million in development assistance to Sudan. In 2021 alone, the EU is already delivering around €55 million worth of humanitarian aid.

The EU is also the largest donor to the Sudan Family Support Program, launched in February 2021, aimed at mitigating the impacts of critical economic reforms on the most vulnerable with €305 million funding from #TeamEurope.

A democratic Sudan remains the best guarantee for the long-term stability of the country and the broader region. This is why the EU, alongside other partners, remains actively engaged in Sudan. A beacon of hope in a troubled region, Sudan will hopefully continue to make history and lead the way by inspiring democratic forces across the region.
