Summer Reading Challenge Kicks Off at the Library

Oceanside Public Library invites children, teens, and adults to participate in Summer Reading 2022 by signing up online at oceansidepubliclibrary.org. All ages earn prizes and are invited to attend literacy-based, educational and fun events from June 1 through August 6, 2022. This year's theme is "Read Beyond the Beaten Path," with a focus on expanding horizons through new reads, the many different experiences summertime offers and the Library's Community Health and Well-being Initiative. The Community Health and Well-being Initiative promotes getting outdoors and connecting with nature through new services, such as the Library's seed library and California State Park Passes available for check out. Summer Reading and the Community Health and Well-being Initiative are sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library.

Children, ages 0-12, earn prizes for reading 10 hours or 10 books and can also complete fun and engaging optional activities. After reading 10 hours or 10 books, kids earn a prize bag with a free book, museum coupons, and craft kit, and will be entered into weekly prize drawings for gift cards. Kids and families can enjoy storytimes, book clubs, and attend other entertaining and educational events too, such as Mad Science of San Diego "Fire and Ice" Show at the Mission Branch Library, 3861-B Mission Ave, on June 15 at 3:30pm, and Living Coast Discovery Center's "Totally Tide pools" visit at the Civic Center Library, 330 North Coast Highway, on June 21 at 3:30pm.

Teens, ages 13-17, earn prizes for reading and reviewing 3 books and the chance to win grand prizes for book reviews. Teens can read 10 books to achieve Super Reader Status and earn an additional prize. All participants will also be entered into weekly prize drawings for gift cards.

Teens can participate in programs including a variety of book clubs and gaming events. Teens can also enjoy a Virtual Reality experience with technology and coaches from VR Partyz at the Mission Branch Library, 3861-B Mission Ave, on June 22 at 4pm and at Civic Center Library, 330 N. Coast Hwy, on July 19 at 4pm. Other special events include magic shows with comedian magician Justin Rivera, and drawing workshops with Anime Your Way. Teens looking for something to do and wanting to give back to their community can sign up to volunteer at the Library.

Adults participate in Summer Reading too! Pick up a prize just for signing up. Read 3 books to be entered into opportunity drawings for Book Lover Baskets. Adults can also participate in many monthly book clubs and other special events.
