CFPB Extends Small Lending Rule Compliance Dates

The CFPB has announced plans to extend the compliance dates for its small business lending rule due to ongoing litigation.

The rule requires lenders to collect and report information about the small business credit applications they receive, including geographic and demographic data, lending decisions, and the price of credit.

The CFPB has issued informal guidance and will release an interim final rule regarding the extension of compliance dates, which are as follows:

  • Tier 1 institutions (highest volume lenders): The new compliance date is July 18, 2025, and the first filing deadline is June 1, 2026.
  • Tier 2 institutions (moderate volume lenders): The new compliance date is January 16, 2026, and the first filing deadline is June 1, 2027.
  • Tier 3 institutions (lowest volume lenders): The new compliance date is October 18, 2026, and the first filing deadline is June 1, 2027.
