HONOLULU, June 13, 2024 - Hawaiian Electric crews have completed repairs and restored electric service to customers in the downtown Honolulu area. Power to downtown circuits began coming on at about 7:20 p.m., about nine hours after the outage began for most customers.

"We know this was an extremely challenging day for our customers in the downtown area and Chinatown, especially businesses and government offices. We thank them for their patience and offer our sincere apologies for the disruption," said Darren Pai, Hawaiian Electric spokesperson.

Because the outage affected so many underground systems, repair crews and technicians will remain on standby overnight and will closely monitor the downtown network and the Iwilei substation where equipment was damaged by the event. Customers should monitor Hawaiian Electric's social media channels and local news media for any changes in status of the downtown grid, especially before heading to work on Friday.

Most of the downtown Honolulu area is served by underground cables that run below the streets. This underground network was originally built in the 1960s and 1970s. While sections have been updated and maintained over the decades, much of the original cable remains in service.
