MTA Announces Next Round of Subway Stations Re-NEW-vation Upgrades in 2024

13 More Stations to be Upgraded This Spring Across New York City

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that New York City Transit (NYCT) will complete upgrades, repairs, and deep cleanings at 13 additional subway stations in the second quarter of 2024 across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. This is part of NYCT's Re-NEW-vation Program which utilizes planned service outages to perform stationwide repairs, enhancements, and deep cleanings. When regular service returns to the station, customers are met with cleaner and brighter station environments.

"Since the start of the Re-NEW-vation program in 2022, we've delivered cleaner stations, critical repairs and maintenance, and a heightened transit experience for customers across our system," said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. "2024 is no different, as the number of stations that have undergone re-NEW-vations increased to over 75, with even more stations on the list later this year."

"The Re-NEW-vation program demonstrates for all of our riders that we are committed to cleaner, brighter, and safer stations, and easier commutes for everyone," said MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara. "So far the program has reached stations in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx, and it's not stopping anytime soon."

"Thanks to the hard work of our station maintenance crews and so many others, we've been able to re-NEW-vate stations at amazing speeds," said New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow. "I couldn't be prouder of the NYCT employees who've helped us reach 75 re-NEW-vated stations so far. I'm looking forward to even more re-NEW-vations later this year."

During re-NEW-vations, stations are scrapped, primed, and repainted. Lightening fixtures are replaced with new LED lights and added in areas to brighten dark spaces. Benches located on platforms and mezzanines are refinished for customer seating. Outdated signs are removed and replaced where needed with clearer messaging. Cracks are repaired and repaved to prevent tripping hazards. Each station also undergoes repairs specific to each location's needs including completely rebuilding and rehabilitating stairways, installing new draining systems to prevent flooding conditions during heavy weather events, comprehensive tile work, and extensive track ceiling repairs.

The next round of stations to receive re-NEW-vations in the second quarter of 2024 are:

The re-NEW-vations planned at Flushing Av and Greenpoint Av ​in Brooklyn will take place to coincide with previously planned suspensions of ​train service from Court Square to Nassau Avenue from June 28 through July 15, Court Square to Bedford-Nostrand Avenue from July 5 through Aug. 12, and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Aug. 12 through Sept. 2.

Since the beginning of the program in 2022, 75 stations have been upgraded. In October of 2023, NYCT celebrated its accomplishment of completing a promised 50 re-NEW-vated stations before the end of 2023. In all, 53 stations were refurbished in 2023, the first full year of the program. Thirteen more stations have been renovated in the first quarter of 2024, including 170 St ​and Marble Hill - 225 St ​, where crews delivered over 40,000 sq. ft. of new, freshly painted surfaces, cleaned gutters and drains, and repaired leaks. Since the start of the program, NYCT workers have:

• repainted 2.2 million sq. ft. of surfaces
• replaced 103,930 sq. ft. of wall tiles
• replaced 4,596 sq. ft. of floor tiles
• fabricated, installed, and replaced 1,599 metal signs
• fabricated and installed 243 new decals
• removed 142 outdated, damaged or unnecessary signs and maps
• repaired 72 signs and mounted brackets
