Maloney Announces More Than $184,000 in Critical Infrastructure Grants Awarded to Hereford Township, Boyertown and Topton Boroughs

HARRISBURG - Rep. David Maloney (R-Berks) today announced the awarding of $184,390 in grant funding for community improvements in the 130th Legislative District from the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) as part of the Local Shares Account statewide program.
The program, which was established by the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act of 2004, distributes gaming revenues through the CFA in support of projects in the public interest within the Commonwealth.
"This is a very competitive grant program, so I am very pleased we were able to secure substantial funding for three important projects to enhance the quality of life in our communities," Maloney said. "Hereford Township will receive $67,095 for a new playground at Treichlers Mill Park; Boyertown Borough will receive $60,000 toward an emergency generator for the Trout Run Dam pump station; and Topton Borough will receive $57,295 for the rehabilitation of a chlorine chamber at a wastewater treatment plant."
More details on the projects are as follows:
• The new playground will be made of commercial-grade vinyl, which is a low-maintenance material. In addition to the new playground, the project will also install new wood fiber mulch, a playground border and improve drainage in the area. The goal of this project is to keep Treichlers Mill Park a desirable location for local kids and families to play, be active and spend time together outdoors.
• The Topton Borough Wastewater Treatment Plant is deteriorating due to corrosion from the chlorine. This is causing damage to the concrete structure, which allows organisms to grow and hinders the disinfection process. The proposed project will rehabilitate the chlorine chamber by repairing the concrete and installing a protective coating to prevent future damage.
• The Trout Run Dam pump station is the primary water supply for the Boyertown Borough water system, which serves a population of approximately 8,000 people. When there is a loss of power at the pump station, the plant operator is required to switch to the Popodickon Dam for the supply of water. The Popodickon Dam is a considerably smaller body of water containing less desirable quality of water than the Trout Run Dam. The installation of the emergency generator will allow for continued, uninterrupted use of the pump station during temporary power outages due to storms or other natural disasters.
