Sinema Writes U.S. Transportation Secretary in Support of Mohave County’s RAISE Application for Highway Construction & Safety

Funding from RAISE Grant would increase safety and efficiency by constructing a new partial traffic interchange on U.S. 93, which connects Phoenix to Las Vegas

WASHINGTON - Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema wrote to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in support of Mohave County's Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Discretionary Grant application.

If granted, the County would use the funds to construct a new partial traffic interchange on U.S. 93, which connects Phoenix, Ariz. to Las Vegas, Nev. and currently serves 16,570 vehicles per day, at the Pierce Ferry Road intersection - improving safety and efficiency for Arizonans who live and commute in the area.

"We're requesting the Department of Transportation to give full and fair consideration to Mohave County's deserving RAISE Grant proposal, which will create jobs, streamline a congested and often dangerous traffic area, and increase public safety," said Sinema.

Tens of thousands of visitors each year use the intersection of U.S. 93 at Pierce Ferry Road, which serves the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, supporting Mohave County and the Hualapai Tribe's tourism industries. The increase of severe crash occurrences through the present day intersection equates to a staggering 30 fatal intersection crashes per 100 million entering vehicles, a fatal crash rate 19 times the Arizona average.

The RAISE award would fast track the rural highway project in an Area of Persistent Poverty through a 27-month process in completing traffic interchange alternatives analysis, environmental clearances, right-of-way acquisition, final design, and construction.

The project has support from both the Hualapai Tribal Council and the Arizona Department of Transportation.
