Computer Science Student – Meet Sophomore Theo Schulte

Theo Schulte is currently a sophomore at Mount St. Joseph University. He is a dual major in Computer Science and Social Studies Secondary Education. He also participates in the state-of-the-art cITe program. The cITe program, short for Center for IT Engagement, offers students affordable education, paid co-ops, cohort-based learning, and the opportunity to graduate with a dual major.

1. Why did you choose the Mount?

I chose MSJ because of the community it offers. A small school feel is really important to me in and out of the classroom and I think the Mount is the perfect size to accommodate that. In addition, I knew I wanted to pursue both technology and education and the cITe program enabled me to do that.

2. What are your majors and graduation year?

I am a Dual Major in Social Studies Secondary Education and Social Computing. I am projected to graduate in 2026.

3. What inspired you to pursue Social Computing and your other major?

I chose to pursue Education because teaching makes me feel like I'm helping make the world a better place. I always knew I wanted to help people and teaching is the best way for me to do that. I also majored in Social Computing because it gave me an opportunity to study what I am interested in outside of my history concentration. During high school, I learned a bit of 3D printing, laser cutting, and the basics of fabrication, and carpentry and I wanted to be able to give my future students those same opportunities.

4. What is your favorite part about being in the cITe program?

My favorite part of the cITe program is the opportunities it allows us. Through the cITe program I've been able to be a part of different research projects, I've been able to work with 3D Printers, and I've been able to gain some really helpful experience in my field.

5. What has been your favorite project you've worked on so far?

I've really enjoyed my time working at The Bayley place. I provide IT Support at the assisted living facility across from the Mount. It may be corny, but I feel like I learn just as much from the residents there as they do from me. Being able to be a positive spot in their lives is something I cherish.

6. Do you have an idea of what career you would like to pursue post-graduation?

I am still currently weighing my options for after graduation. I'd like to get experience in teaching Secondary Education but I am also considering graduate school for Educational Sciences or Higher Ed Administration. I'm not 100% sure what I want to do but I know I want to make a positive impact on young people.
