Nature of Incident: Flee and Elude

Incident #: 23-012132

Date & Time: 12/03/2023 at 0249hrs

Location: I 94 Hwy from the 63 mile marker to the 73/74 mile marker. The pursuit encompassed Antwerp Twp in Van Buren County and ended in Kalamazoo County.

Suspect Information:

Driver info: 30yr old African American male from Kalamazoo area

Passenger info: 36yr old African American male from Grand Rapids area

Vehicle Information: Black 2007 Mercury Marquis out of Michigan

Narrative:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that on 12/3/2023 at approximately 0249hrs in the morning Van Buren County Central Dispatch received several calls in regard to a dark colored sedan traveling eastbound on I-94 highway near the 56 mile marker. The vehicle was described as driving all over the road with erratic speeds and unable to maintain its lane. Another caller advised that the vehicle in question did not have a functioning headlight on the vehicle and was continuing to swerve all over the roadway.

Deputies observed a vehicle matching the description of the BOL vehicle near the 63 mile marker. Deputies followed the vehicle obtaining a driving history of it. Multiple violations were observed, along with the defective headlight. A traffic stop was attempted, and the vehicle refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit continued eastbound on I-94 hwy. Spike strips were deployed by a Sergeant from the Van Buren County near the 65 mile marker. The spikes were ineffective. The pursuit continued into Kalamazoo County where Deputies from Kalamazoo were successful in disabling the vehicle with Stop Sticks. The vehicle finally came to rest near the US 131 interchange.

Once the vehicle finally stopped, Deputies on scene safely removed the driver and placed him into custody without incident. The passenger of the vehicle had a visible firearm in his waistband. Deputies were able to safely remove the gun and after a brief struggle placed the passenger into custody as well. The firearm was found to be stolen from a different jurisdiction.

The driver was found to have multiple warrants out of various locations including Kalamazoo, Kent County, and Wyoming PD. This case remains open and under investigation.

The driver is currently being held on charges of Flee and Elude and OWI, along with holds on various warrants from other agencies.

The passenger is being held on multiple charges including Resisting arrest, CCW violation, Possession of a stolen firearm, Felon in possession of a firearm
