Former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle to Be Awarded Japan's Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun
The Government of Japan announced on Friday, November 3, that former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, the Founder and CEO of the Daschle Group, and one of the longest serving Senate Democratic Leaders in history, will be awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, the highest honor bestowed upon foreigners for their notable contributions to Japan.
Daschle was recognized for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the United States.
"During my decades of service in Congress, I had the honor of working closely with our friends and allies in Japan to strengthen ties between our two nations. It is my privilege to continue working with Japan to strengthen this critical global alliance and explore ways for greater economic and security cooperation."
Established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese Government. Awarded to individuals who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, this honor is one of the highest orders bestowed by the Japanese government. Previous recipients of this award include Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates, Former Vice President Dick Cheney, Ambassador Caroline Kennedy, and Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
