Portland State University named Jeremy Youde as the Dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA). Youde currently serves as Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He will join PSU on August 8.

"Jeremy brings a proven track record of inclusive and transparent leadership, skillful change management, and an infectious enthusiasm for harnessing the power of higher education for the collective good," said interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Shelly Chabon. "His long history of applied, impactful research and robust local and global community engagement position him well for successful, mission-driven advocacy on behalf of CUPA faculty, staff, and students."

Youde is a political scientist with a particular focus on the intersection between politics and global public health, having written eight books related to that topic. In addition to the University of Minnesota Duluth, Youde has held leadership and teaching positions at the Australian National University, Grinnell College and San Diego State University.

"I have long been a fan and admirer of the great work that CUPA does, and I am so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with the college's faculty, staff and students as its next dean," Youde said. "The sorts of knowledge and understanding that CUPA produces are exactly what the world needs as we try to untangle the tricky issues facing society at all different levels."

Youde earned a doctorate and master of arts in political science from the University of Iowa and a bachelor's degree in political science and global development studies from Grinnell College.

Chabon expressed her heartfelt thanks to Shawn Smallman, who has served as CUPA's interim Dean throughout the current academic year. She also offered her deepest gratitude to the CUPA Dean Search Committee which was chaired by Cilff Allen, Dean of the School of Business.

Youde is the third of six new deans who will be hired during the 2023-24 academic year.
