Support The Statesman in College Media Madness 2024

Stony Brook's student-run news organization, The Statesman, is participating in College Media Madness, an annual fundraising competition for student newsrooms. This year, 23 college newsrooms from across the country are vying to see which one can raise the most money. The Statesman is one of five tri-state area schools participating, and the only SUNY school.

College Media Madness was organized by The Daily Orange, the independent student news organization serving Syracuse University, and is run by The State Press, the independent student news organization serving Arizona State University. This year the event runs through April 8.

The Statesman has been serving the campus community since 1958 - years before the university moved to its current location in Stony Brook, and is the longest-running student publication of the university. A print edition was published every Monday of the academic year until 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the publication to discontinue printing and focus solely on digital material.

"The Statesman is essential to Stony Brook's campus," said Viola Flowers '24, a senior journalism major and editor-in-chief of The Statesman. "We are dedicated to providing our campus community with the most timely, accurate and reliable information we can. While we have extensive support from our local advertisers and university, we are asking donors to also support us in this fundraising so we can continue to keep doing the work we are proud of."

With the funds raised, The Statesman hopes to invest in resources to help expand digital platforms, social media networks, newsletter and websites; create a solid digital media revenue plan and invest in the appropriate spaces; help cover day-to-day operating expenses; and increase The Statesman's presence on campus, throughout the Stony Brook community and Long Island as a whole.

TheStatesman and its editors have been recognized for their work by the Society for Professional Journalists, Newsday, the Martin Buskin Committee for Campus Journalism and the Society for News Design, among other organizations. Many of its editors have gone on to enjoy distinguished careers in journalism at prominent places such as NBC, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other national organizations.
