Police pounce on alleged poacher and seized 1.6 million rand of succulents in Garies

NORTHERN CAPE - Springbok Highway Patrol received information about alleged succulent poacher, operationalised it and arrested one male with Conophytums worth about R1.6 million.

During the early hours of 08 December 2022, members of Garies SAPS swiftly responded on the information regarding a suspicious person traveling from Springbok to Cape Town by bus.

The bus was intercepted, stopped and searched in Garies and the suspect was found with the poached Conophytum plants.

The adult male suspect was arrested and will be appearing in the Springbok Magistrates Court soon on charges of alleged dealing in endangered plants.

The District Commander for Namakwa, Brig Schalk Andrews commended Sgt. JH De Waal, Cst. NF Molokomme and Cst. BG Cloete from Garies SAPS and the Springbok Highway Patrol for their quick reaction that led to the arrest. He also applauded the community for their assistance in this regard.
