TR.EM Navy Star radar reflector for lifeboats and rescue boats has MED approval removed

Published on: 01 December 2022

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has advised that type examination certificate (module B) number MEDB00004SK for the TR.EM Navy Star radar reflector for lifeboats and rescue boats has been withdrawn by DNV GL, due to concerns that the equipment does not meet the required testing standards.

This equipment falls under the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations 2016 (as amended) ("the Regulations"), which provides that a valid type examination certificate is required before equipment can be legally placed onboard a United Kingdom ship.

Following the withdrawal of the certificate, the MCA is concerned that the TR.EM Navy Star radar reflector for lifeboats and rescue boats could compromise the health and safety of the ship's crew, passengers or other persons under regulation 25(4) of the Regulations.

Where such equipment is already onboard a UK ship, the MCA would therefore advise that this be removed and replaced with an equivalent piece of equipment that holds a valid type-approval certificate.
