Commonwealth v. Dornell Marcus Collins Jr. ; Defendant Found Guilty of Manslaughter after Shooting Man Three Times in the Back

Virginia Beach, Va. - Colin D. Stolle, Commonwealth's Attorney for the city of Virginia Beach, announced that Dornell Marcus Collins Jr., 28 years old, formerly of the 900 block of Truro Court in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was found guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter and Possession of a Firearm on School Property. Circuit Court Judge A. Bonwill Shockley, who presided over the three-day trial, will formally sentence Collins on August 8, 2023.

The Commonwealth's evidence proved that on July 22, 2020, Nicholas Lutz and a friend walked home from a bar on Holland Road in the City of Virginia Beach. They encountered Dornell Collins Jr., and exchanged words with him. Collins shot Lutz multiple times then stood over him and shot him again. Collins was arrested several hours later and eventually confessed to the shooting, claiming it was self-defense. Collins was linked to the crime scene after leaving a book bag of personal items and a firearm at a nearby elementary school. The bullets, casings and firearm were all forensically linked to Collins.
