Fireworks restrictions in place: Although use of some consumer fireworks is permitted by state law in Scottsdale this holiday, their use in and near many sensitive desert areas remains illegal and violators are subject to substantial fines. Fire officials prefer fireworks be left to professional shows, which have safety personnel onsite to immediately address fire issues.

Use of fireworks is prohibited in Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Pinnacle Peak Park and all properties located within 1 mile of these fragile desert lands. The use of fireworks is also prohibited on all publicly owned properties, which include but are not limited to, city buildings, city parking lots, city parks, public schools and city streets.

COVID-19 case rate continues to climb in Maricopa County. We all want the pandemic to be over. But it's not. Twenty-six percent of COVID-19 tests reported to Maricopa County Public Health are positive. Masking up indoors can help, but the best way to protect yourself from getting seriously ill from COVID-19 is to stay up-to-date on your vaccines. For those who have already been vaccinated, recommended boosters can help extend your protection and oral antivirals may be an option too. For those who have yet to get a vaccine, get the facts and then consider getting the shot. Get the latest guidance.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Save water, salt and energy by ensuring your water softener does not regenerate if you're away for the summer. Regeneration uses water to clean the water softener's resin beads periodically so it can efficiently soften water. If you have an on-demand water softener, this only occurs as needed. If you have a timed one, it regenerates on a set schedule. Either way, disengage the water softener by using the bypass located at the top of water softener and unplug it. Refer to your owner's manual for specifics. You also may want to go a step further and help keep salts out of our wastewater and environment by taking advantage of Scottsdale's water softener removal rebate.

Government Relations Director Dale Wiebusch will share how he advocates for Scottsdale's positions on issues before the U.S. Congress, the State Legislature, and regional governing boards, as well as briefs the Mayor and Council, the city manager and senior management on complex intergovernmental issues.

Scottsdale 360 is a virtual learning series that highlights the people, policies and programs that shape our community. Sign up for one session - or the entire series. All classes take place from 11 a.m.-noon through July. Register.

Auto renewals are coming to Scottsdale Public Library starting July 1. This means if you forget to renew your item, no problem! The system will extend your lending time automatically. Items with a waitlist or marked as non-renewable cannot be automatically renewed. Eligible items can be renewed up to six times.

FYI

Discover better alternatives to sandbags for flood control. Before the next storm event arrives, the city encourages residents to explore the newer alternatives to sandbags - which are often more convenient, effective and easier to get. Flood diversion tubes act much like sandbags to block floodwaters from entering homes. The tubes are easy to place and weigh little until filled with water. Any common garden hose attaches, making the flood diversion barrier simple to fill. Other options include transportable flood fence barriers and water absorbent cushions.

Residents whose properties are subject to seasonal flooding are encouraged to explore these alternatives to sandbags through local hardware stores and online retailers. Learn how to prepare and get safety tips.
